Movie Review Salton Sea! Your Thanksgiving free movie list is only two movies long, but what movies! Unlike Halloween (that I offered you a list of 100 free scary movies here), Thanksgiving takes a different twist. Neither could well be specific to Thanksgiving, nonetheless they relate to some themes in the holiday. Frankly, I can enjoy these free movies for Thanksgiving and any day of the year.

Big oil company propaganda using a heart! Just the free movie we'd like for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one with the most lyrical American films ever made. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry through the Library of Congress to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of a Cajun boy with his fantastic family, living for the bayous you might say of life we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land towards the oil company, which comes in, drills, leaving everything much like it was, clean and unspoiled with the exception that the family carries a little more money. (Yes, it had been funded by the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends most of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating down the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, together with his pet raccoon. He never wears an existence preserver or shoes... doesn't even have a cell phone to contact case he gets struggling. There is not much story, only a celebration (in such stunning black and white photography that you might well wonder just what the big deal is around color) of an way of life which is no longer along with us.
All in the actors were amateurs, as well as for most, this is their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. Boudreaux, who played the boy, was moving into a FEMA trailer with his wife of fifty-five years, after Hurricane Rita destroyed their house. (source). A monochrome silent film that ends having a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, exactly what every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have three good reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc in this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever produced. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died convinced that the last copy had been destroyed. In a amount of weirdness that sounds much more a movie as opposed to truth, a virtually complete print was discovered in 1981 in a very janitor's closet of a Norwegian mental institution.
